Rhythm
House started in the 1940s. We've remained at this same location ever since,
witnessing the metamorphosis of Bombay (now Mumbai), from a city with a genteel
ambience into the throbbing megalopolis that it is today. Our area gets its
quaint name from a pre-Independence black equestrian statue that once stood
there, becoming a prominent landmark of the city.
Megalopolises spawn continuing change. Impacting social mores, generating new
movements. So music itself inevitably got caught up in this churn. In the
staple music category
that we call Hindi Films, we now have a new sub-set called Old Hindi Films.
Echoing an era when melody was queen, a time when the lyric was cherished like
good verse is. Today's Hindi Film counterpart, has been invaded by electronic
sound and lyrics that flirt with the bizarre, yet sounding good and making a
lot of sense in the present social context. Indeed change has found its way
into all forms of music, not sparing the Classical too. The gharana discipline
is no longer cut and dried as it used to be with today's vocalists producing
the eclectic sound, borrowing across gharanas at will. New classical
instruments have found their place too, with the lead being taken by the
santoor.
Perhaps the exemplar of all change has been the creation of a
new category into music catalogues, namely Indipop. When it began some ten
years, it was loosely referred to as a fusion of sounds, an East-West melange,
but as it started to take shape, it was time for a formal christening. Indipop
is still not quite out of the freckles stage, but no one in the business doubts
it will soon achieve maturity and cross-border appeal.
We've enjoyed serving our customer for the past fifty years. Vending 78 rpm
lacquered discs, LP vinyl discs, and more recently the cassette and the compact
disc. From music labels based far and wide, in both Indian and Western product.
We look forward to the next fifty years, furthering the reputation we have
already acquired, for fair dealings, for having well trained staff, and above
all for stocking the best from within the music industry. An industry with a
magical charm of its own, an industry that has provided happiness to millions.
